'ASL is about conveying your feelings through your body as well as speaking. Just like how you show emotion in your voice while you talk. The less your face is hidden the more emotion in your' and at this point Karkat added a quotation to the word ''speech''. He grinned at him calmly. 'now what do you want to learn'

This went against everything Bro taught Dave: showing emotion. They could hint emotions, but even if they felt passionately about something, it couldn't be shown as more than mild interest or as a side thought. Dave spoke up since he couldn't sign what he wanted to be taught; if he could already sign it, he wouldn't have to ask in the first place. "How do you say, 'What do you want for breakfast'?"

Karkat signed out each part slowly before putting them all together for Dave. 'What else do you want to learn'

"I guess you could teach me the different kinds of food you like so I'll know what you want when I go to the store," Dave suggested, getting out of bed and swiping Karkat's notepad off the floor along with a pencil before re-seating himself beside the troll again. He offered the items to Karkat as he stated, "So write down what you like, then show me the sign for them."

Karkat wrote down a long list of foods, filling the whole page in three columns. At the top of the first column he wrote like, the second column was headed by is okay and the last column was titled other foods. He handed the list back to Dave and waited for him to read it.

It was a good thing that Karkat had listed the 'okay' and 'other' foods, otherwise he would be on a strict, sweets-only diet. After reading the list, Dave handed it back to Karkat. "Now show me how to sign them."

'in order' Karkat signed, motioning down the list so Dave would understand. He started from the top of the like list and waited until Dave signed back correctly before moving to the next food.

Dave followed most of the motions with ease, only having trouble with a few that involved positioning the wrist a certain way or entwining specific fingers. It took quite a while to get through the list and Dave was actually starting to doubt his abilities at memorizing all of this, what with it being his first day getting a grasp on this stuff. He would just have to keep practicing to make sure he wouldn't forget them later.

It was well after noon when they were done and Karkat's stomach growled. He looked down at it with a small frown, resting a hand on it as if he had been unsure if it had made the noise.

"I've still got your sandwich chillaxing in the fridge if you're hungry," Dave mentioned, motioning the sign for 'sandwich' just because he knew the word now and didn't want to forget it soon.

Karkat looked up at him thoughtfully. 'share it with me' he signed. As far as he knew, Dave hadn't eaten yet today either and he felt better knowing Dave had eaten something rather than not.

Dave gave a half smile to Karkat, signing, 'Ok'. He set his shades back on and walked out of the room and into the kitchen, vaguely wondering where Bro was at this hour as his mind was awash in a sea of freshly taught sign language.

Bro came out of the bathroom moments later, looking disheveled. "What's keeping the two of you so quiet?" he grunted, flopping back down in the futon.

"Learning ASL," Dave said as he opened the fridge, looking around for the sandwich. "When you're not hungover, I could show you some later." He pulled out the sandwich from yesterday and shut the fridge door.

Dave shrugged as he crossed the living room, sandwich in hand. "Beats me. Lemme check with him one second." He cracked the door to his room open a bit and held a foot inside, looking over at Karkat as he asked, "You need anything? Bro might run errands for us later."

Karkat shook his head and let himself fall back onto his back on Dave's bed. His stomach growled again and he rested his hand on his stomach again.

"Nah, he's good too," Dave called back at Bro before walking over to Karkat and taking a seat beside his resting form, unwrapping the sandwich with nimble fingers. He handed one of the pre-sliced halves to Karkat, taking a bite out of his own half as he did.

Karkat sat up and took the sandwich half gratefully, biting into it with a purr. When he was finished he signed to Dave 'Is there anything else you want to learn now'

Dave practically inhaled his half of the sandwich, having been hungry since he woke up. He shrugged in response to Karkat's question, tossing the plastic wrap for the sandwich into his trash bin over by the door.

Then he thought of something that he actually did want to ask Karkat, but was kind of hesitant to. No, not just kind of: impossibly so. He couldn't ask him. It would just come out brash and rude like, 'What's the deal with tentabulges? How do you pee with that thing? Do you go sitting down? Do you have testicles under them? Are they internal?' Besides, asking anything like that would be the equivalent of having bright, neon signs flashing arrows at his head with the words, 'He saw/touched your weird alien cock while you were out of it'.

"What's the word for 'cute'?" He asked instead, playing it off like he wasn't on a trail of perverted contemplation.

Karkat blinked at Dave blankly, then he frowned as he tried to think. He held up a finger to signify giving him a minute and closed his eyes to visualize the hand signs, then he repeated the signs for Dave.

Dave smiled, repeating what Karkat had shown him, but with, 'I think you are very-' added in front of it. It was only his first day learning ASL and he was already using it for flirtation. With a troll. Whatever. He wasn't just flirting; he was being perfectly honest.

Karkat blinked at him, then scowled and papped him with his own pillow, growling softly. 'I am not teaching you ASL to tease me fuckass' he signed once he discarded the pillow.

Dave snickered behind the pillow when he was papped in the face with it. He signed, 'I wasn't teasing,' before scooting closer to Karkat to get his point across.
