Just a Number(Grandpa/Dave)

Dave was silent as he watched Grandpa Harley hit another bulls eye. The elderly man was grinning as he reloaded his shotgun. Jake was at the station next to him with his signature double pistols, firing away. Jade was on her grandfather's other side with her rifle. Sunday was always the day the Harley-English household went to their local shooting range.

Dave smiled as Josh turned back around to shoot at a new target. He had always found the older man to be quite attractive. Jade's grandfather was strong, handsome, smart, and a gentleman. Older people were better to date. They knew what they wanted and didn't play games. You were either together or not.

Jade (being his best gal pal) immediately took it upon herself to help Dave score a date with her grandfather. So far it didn't seem like Josh even knew that Dave liked him.

Jake was obviously showing off since Dave was there. He was pleased the younger Strider was starting to take an interest in guns.

Josh barely even noticed Dave was watching him.

Dave started to clap enthusiastically when Josh hit another bulls eyes. He wasn't sure of how else to show the old man his affections for him just yet. This was going to be a slow, delicate process. He didn't want Grandpa Harley to get mad at him or think this was just a schoolboy crush.

Josh laughed. "Its easy, chap, have Jake show you how its done. No need for applause"

Dave could feel his cheeks heating up as he folded his hands in his lap. Josh probably thought he was an idiot now. Jade was grinning as she turned to look at her grandfather.

"Why don't you you show him Gramps? You've been doing this longer than Jake has."

"The very same reason Jake took over teaching you" Josh replied with a chuckle. "I've lost the patience to teach young'ins like you"

Jade was still grinning. "Dave is a quick learner, I promise." She turned the saftey on rifle on, putting the muzzle down. "Besides you're better with a shotgun than Jake."

Dave was fiddling with his hands in his lap as he watched them.

Josh laughed. "Him, handle a shotgun? The kick'll put him on his ass, he's such a tiny thing! Strider's not sturdy stock like you m'dear"

Dave knew his whole face had to be bright red now. He got up and mumbled a goodbye before leaving. Jade was frowning as she watched him leave. "That wasn't very nice Grandpa. Dave is insecure about his appearance."

Josh frowned. "What for? He's just a wisp of a thing, nothing to be insecure over"

Jade sighed. "People at school make fun of him for being so skinny. Jeff does too."

Josh made a disgruntled noise. "Call him back and I'll let him have a go. Show him how its done proper."

Jade was pulling her phone out of her pocket as she left the range. Dave shouldn't have gotten too far away just yet. Hopefully he wasn't too upset right now.

Josh made another noise in the back of his throat and started going over his shotgun, making sure it was alright for someone else to use it, even momentarily.

It was close to five minutes later when Jade returned with Dave. She gently leading him by the hand over to Josh. His cheeks were still dusted pink. Jade was smiling when they got to the older man. She let go of her slightly older companions hand and patted his shoulder.

"Go on."

Josh smiled at him. "Ready for a lesson then?"

Dave shly nodded. "Yes sir." Jade went back to her station to give them some space.

"Show me how you hold a gun" Josh stated, handing him the shotgun after flicking the safety on.

Dave shrugged. "I don't know how. Never done this before."

"Then show me how you think you would hold it"

Dave was trying to control his shaking as he moved to hold the gun. He really wanted to impress the older man. "Like this?" God, he sounded so stupid. He should have just gone home.

Josh hummed. "Not bad for a beginner." he moved up behind him, fixing his stance.

Dave tensed slightly. Josh was well built and muscular for a man his age. Damn teenage hormones and emotions. Hopefully the younger Strider wouldn't do anything embarassing. God if he popped a boner now he didn't think he'd be able to face the elder Harley ever again.

Josh nodded and flicked the safety off. "Alright. Aim with the notch on the top of the barrel. Aim slightly higher than what you want."

Dave's trembling had lessened. He lifted the shotgun to aim, hoping he was doing alright. The boom from the gun was louder than Dave was expecting. The throwback rocked him slightly but he was still standing.
